Open Call: Safeland Micro-Commissions

As part of Safeland, Gaada has created a series of 5 micro-commissions for writers, artists and community groups to respond to the below selection of uncompleted projects of Walter Scott's Shetland by Numbers.

The remaining two uncomplete projects are:
1. Salt-water Islands
4. Coastal Walking

Safeland creates spaces to explore the margins of place and community – placing more emphasis on uncovering the unrecorded and overlooked histories in Shetland. Safeland is particularly interested in creating space for neurodiverse, queer, and intersectional reads on the Shetland landscape, re-reading of accepted histories, queering the map and widening symbolism, aligning to Gaada's core aim to create a culture in Shetland that is more representative of the diverse people that exist here.

The commissioned individuals/groups are tasked with not completing the projects, but instead to use them as a framework to inspire/inform ideas or ways of connecting with Shetland's landscape. Perhaps over long periods or even lifetimes.

Micro-Commissions include:

  • £500 fee

  • Access to Gaada facilities and resources

  • Support from Gaada art workers to develop + realise the project

Aims:

Gaada is interested in seeing personal interactions with place and want to celebrate a range of responses from artists, writers and groups. Some examples of possible outcomes could include drawing, poetry, scores for interacting with the landscape, map-making or text based work.

The commissioned work will come together in a publication designed and produced at Gaada.
