Open Call: Brig∂i Residency - Norway 2026

Gaada invites expressions of interest from Shetland-based artists for a self-directed artist-led research and development residency to take place in Bergen, Norway during 2026.

This opportunity is part of Brig∂i, Gaada’s ongoing programme to foster creative exchange between artists in Shetland and Norway. Brig∂i aims to reposition Shetland as a central point in a wider North Atlantic cultural conversation, supporting artists to forge international relationships, develop their practice, and explore shared social, ecological, and creative concerns.

What we’re offering

  • £2,900 to support travel, accommodation, subsistence, and materials over the course of 1 week

  • £850 artist fee (based on the 2025 SAU Residency Rate)

  • Additional production/presentation budget to support a public sharing of the experience in Shetland (e.g. publication, talk, workshop, exhibition)

  • Shetland-based mentoring and/or critical support from Gaada tailored to your needs (could be project development, planning, risk assessment, logistics, etc.)

  • Optional Bergen-based support from our partner Pamflett (approx. one day of guidance or studio time during the week; access to risograph facilities may also be possible)

What we’re looking for

We’re seeking proposals that are:

  • Artist-led: You shape the theme, location, and potential partners (Pamflett and others are possible, but not required)

  • Thoughtful and feasible: We value clear intentions, even if outcomes are open-ended

  • Rooted in Shetland: You must be currently based in Shetland, and committed to sharing your learning locally

  • Reflective of Gaada’s values: We welcome applications from individuals who feel underrepresented or marginalised in the arts

What we don’t expect

  • A final exhibition or polished outcome

  • A one-size-fits-all format

  • Prior experience of working internationally (though that’s welcome too)

Timeline

  • Application deadline: September 2025

  • Shortlisted applicants notified: September 2025

  • Research and planning period: Autumn 2025

  • Residency Period: May-September* 2026 (*dependent on Logan Air Sumburgh > Bergen flight availability)

  • Public sharing in Shetland: By April 2027
