Struan's national certificate for SDSS!

Self Directed Support Scotland’s 2022-2023 Membership Certificate

Longtime Gaada collaborators, artists Struan Haswell and Daniel Clark, have worked together to design Self Directed Support Scotland’s 2022-2023 national Membership Certificate.

The certificate has been issued to every SDSS member organisation across Scotland.

The certificate design incorporates Struan’s experiments with form and materials, with his enduring fascination with the natural kingdom. Each element of the certificate was produced through weekly workshops at Gaada’s Toogs Artist Workshop in Burra.

The certificate incorporates many aspects of Struan’s practice, including hand-marbled paper, charcoal sea creatures, and a unique “Walrus Pile” repeat pattern. The Walrus background motif reflects the SDSS member community, where many different organisations overlap and support one another in a landscape of care and encouragement.

The commission is also the first outing for a unique typeface “Struan’s Hand” which has been developed over the past year with Gaada. SDSS were supplied with a copy which means they have been able to render every member organisation in Struan’s distinctive handwriting and provide a unique certificate.

Gaada would like to send a big thank you to SDSS for thinking of us for this unique opportunity - it’s been a lot of fun!
